  On December 5, 2020, the Rotary Club of Cantonment Secunderabad of Rotary Dist. 3150, Andhra Pradesh launched their organ donation awareness program in association with MOHAN Foundation. The two organisations have recently signed an MOU to jointly undertake awareness initiatives on organ donation.

   

  The launch event was initiated by Mr. Mohan Nishtala, Member, Rotary Club of Cantonment Secunderabad. Mr. Nishtala is very passionate about the life saving cause of organ donation as he himself (along with his children) took the decision to donate his late wife, Mrs. Lakshmi Nishtala’s organs to give a second chance to others to live.

   

  Dr. Sunil Shroff, Managing Trustee, MOHAN Foundation, Mrs. Lalitha Raghuram, Country Director, MOHAN Foundation and Ms. Pallavi Kumar, Executive Director, MOHAN Foundation, Delhi-NCR, were invited as Guests of Honour.

   

  Rotary Club of Secunderabad Sunrise (RCSS) was chartered in December 2001. The club is one of the younger clubs in District 3150 with the members in the average age of 45 years. RCSS symbolizes the values of togetherness and fellowship, and these virtues have made the members stand up and be counted at all times of need.

   

  DGE Rtn. K. Prabhakar, DGN Rtn. T. Rajasekhar, Rtn. Ramakrishna Vemuri, President, Rtn. Malathi Raaj, Director, Community Service, Rtn. Lavanya Dyapa, Secretary of RID 3150, was among the chief attendees of the launch event.

   

  Some of the major points discussed during the launch event:

  • A short testimonial video of Mr. Mohan Nishtala was screened where he shared how he and his family took the decision to donate his wife’s organs. Taking forward from the video, Ms. Pallavi Kumar stressed the need for prior family discussion to enable family members to take the decision on donation. She also informed the audience about a similar signing of MOU between Rotary Dist. 3080 and MOHAN Foundation, Chandigarh and thanked the Rotary members for taking up the cause of organ donation

   

  • DGE Rtn. K. Prabhakar in his talk mentioned that they were very happy and serious about the MOU that has been signed between Rotary Dist. 3150 and MOHAN Foundation. He said that Rotary Dist. 3150 will seriously champion the cause of organ donation by collaborating with MOHAN Foundation.

   

  • Dr. Sunil Shroff said NGOs and Rotary clubs in India should work together to achieve the common goal, i.e,. increasing the rate of organ donation in India and saving the lives of people who are waiting for organs for transplants. He informed that lung diseases are increasing due to COVID-19 and it is estimated that post-COVID, the demand for lung transplants in India would be high so it is high time that we all should work together to promote organ donation in our societies.

   

  • Mrs. Lalitha Raghuram then made a presentation on organ donation, brain death, the statistics in India, the need vs supply gap and other myths related to organ donation.
