Laboratory technicians’ of Gandhi Community College visit MOHAN Foundation to learn about organ donation

  • On 22nd December 2015 Gandhi Community College Thiruvallur requested MOHAN Foundation to conduct an Organ Donation Awareness for their students.  Community College offer courses like Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT) and Diploma in Nursing Assistant. MOHAN Foundation accepted their request and a half day session was conducted in the Head Office.  28 lab technicians participated in the programme to learn about the concept of organ donation and transplantation. Mrs. Ponnarasi, Tutor Gandhi Community College took the initiative to expose her students to a new concept.  

     

    The day started with the ice breaking activity. Followed by it Ms. Sunitha, Transplant coordinator explained about the activities carried out in the MOHAN Foundation. Then she spoke about the Concept of organ donation. She covered the following topics: 

    • What is Organ donation
    • Who can donate
    • Differences between Natural Death and Brain Death
    • Importance of Eye Donation
    • Organs registry and allocation
    • Information sources – helpline and website
    • Understanding counselling

     

    Apart from the talk on concepts of organ donation, the students were shown a short film on organ donation.  They also participated in group activities on poster making competition and role play. The students enjoyed the sessions.

     

    The best poster was selected by Mrs. Sujatha, MIS Manager on the basis of group presentation and concept clarity. The best role play was selected by Mr. Prakash, Transplant Coordinator on stage performance and dialogue deliver and how the concept was explained in the play on the given time limit. The prizes were distributed by Dr. Hemal Kanvinde, Quality Assurance Manager.  MOHAN Foundation also appreciated Mrs. Ponnarasi for her initiative towards this event. A special prize was given to Ms. Kavitha DMLT student for sharing her personal experience on losing her brother dead due kidney failure and her motivation to spread the information in the village to improve the knowledge of people in the community.   

     

    After the session Organ Donation informative brochures were given to all the students. The students promised to pledge their organs and donor cards with their parents’ permission.  Vote of thanks was given by Ms. Sunitha.
