On 14th May 2022, a one-day Workshop on Deceased Organ Donation for ICU professionals was conducted by MOHAN Foundation in collaboration with Medicover Hospitals, Visakhapatnam under the aegis of Jeevandan, Andhra Pradesh. This workshop was designed particularly for ICU Professionals covering the medical, legal and counselling aspects of brain death and organ donation. The workshop was supported by the SBI Foundation. It drew 41 participants including the intensive care professionals and critical care staff from different hospitals in Visakhapatnam.
The inaugural ceremony was graced by Dr. K Rambabu (Director - VIMS & Chief Transplant Coordinator- Jeevandan, Andhra Pradesh), Dr. Satya Vara Prasad (DME[Academic], Govt. of Andhra Pradesh) Mrs. Lalitha Raghuram (Country Director, MOHAN Foundation).
The agenda included the following sessions and panel discussions by eminent speakers and experts from the field:
Dr. K. Rambabu (Director - VIMS & Chief Transplant Coordinator - Jeevandan, Andhra Pradesh), addressed the gathering and talked about Andhra Pradesh’s experience in the field of organ donation and transplantation.
The session on ‘Brain Stem Death - Identification and Certification’ was presented by Dr. Butchi Raju, D M. (Professor & Head, Department of Neurology, Andhra Medical College) and was moderated by Dr. Kuchelababu (Chief Anaesthesiologist & Intensivist, Sevenhills Hospital). As part of the session an educative video on ‘Brain Stem Death Testing’ was played.
A session on ‘Deceased Donor Optimisation’ was presented by Dr. Monanga Srinivas (Consultant, Critical Care, CARE Hospitals). The commonly faced challenges in maintaining a brain dead donor, the conventional therapeutic and supportive measures were addressed during the session.
Followed that was a session on ‘Legal framework for brain stem death and organ donation in India’ addressed by Ms. Sujatha Suriyamoorthi (Associate Director - Courses, MOHAN Foundation). The session included orders on brain stem death certification issued by Kerala and Gujarat state governments. There were interesting discussions on ground realities in certifying brain deaths and obtaining consent from family members.
There was a panel discussion on ‘Potential Organ Donors in Neurosurgery’ and the panellists were - Dr. Satya Varaprasad (Head, Dept. of Neurosurgery, Andhra Medical College), Dr. Sailesh Modi (Sr. Consultant Neurologist, Queen’s NRI Hospital), Dr. N V S Mohan (Clinical Director & Head, Dept. of Neurosurgery, CARE Hospitals), Dr. Tatineni Suresh (Chief Consultant Neurosurgeon, Medicover Hospitals). The discussion was moderated by Dr. T. Mohan. S. Maharaj (Director - Critical Care, Medicover Hospitals). The panel discussion addressed the ways to increase deceased organ donations in the state
The workshop continued with the presentation on counselling grieving families and how to approach families for deceased organ donation by Ms. Lalitha Raghuram (Country Director, MOHAN Foundation). The session was moderated by Dr. Hari Prasad (Head - Critical Care, KIMS).
The last session of the workshop was a panel discussion on managing brain dead organ donors in ICU. The faculty for the panel discussion included intensivists and critical care specialists from different hospitals across Visakhapatnam - Dr. Jajjari John David (Head, Critical Care, Pinnacle Hospital), Dr. Atchyuth Gongada (Head, Dept. of Anaesthesia & Intensive care, Apollo Hospitals), Dr. Takkellapati Lakshmi Rani (Head, Dept. of Critical care, CARE Hospitals), Dr. Ambaty Mohan Rao (Sr. Consultant Critical Care, Medicover Hospitals). The panel discussion was moderated by D. Varalakshmi (Department of Critical Care, NRI Hospitals, Mangalagiri, Vijayawada). The discussion included ‘case scenarios’ on frequently faced challenges in the ICU such as managing hypernatremia, hypotension, hypothermia, diabetes insipidus and nutritional care.
The workshop was concluded with the vote of thanks. The delegates were issued participation certificate and a resource manual which would help as a quick reference guide.
