MOHAN Foundation is observing Organ Donor Week from 6th to 11th August 2012 in commemoration of deceased organ donors. The MOHAN Foundation team is involved in spreading the word on Organ Donation to different sections of the public all through the week. As a part of this, an awareness talk for BBR Nagar Social Welfare Association, Chrompet was organized on 6th August 2012.
Mr. Vijay, Transplant Coordinator, explained the procedure for donating organs and how one can pledge to donate one’s organs through a Donor Card. During the session, “UYIR KODU” a short film in Tamil was screened for the members. Around 40 members attended the programme. The association members were sensitized to the concept of brain death and the difference between coma and brain death.
Hearing the story of 2-year-old Jyotirmayi’s organs (kidneys and corneas) being donated in Hyderabad, the members were deeply touched by the noble act of benevolence of the family members. They praised the family and prayed for the little child’s soul to rest in peace.
After the presentation the members asked various questions, which were answered by Mr. Vijay. The queries related to:
1. Coma and brain death
2. Age criteria for donating organs
3. Whole body donation procedure
4. Time-frame for transplanting organs
Mr. Balaraman, Manager of the BBR Nagar Social Welfare Association lauded MOHAN Foundation for the service that they were rendering to society. He also thanked all the Transplant coordinators, many of whom are in their 20s, for their sincere commitment at this very young age and their counseling services for the cause of deceased organ donation.
