On March 30, 2023, MOHAN Foundation conducted an awareness campaign on organ donation at Shija Academy of Health Sciences, Langol. Ms. Laishram Monica Devi, Programme Officer, MOHAN Foundation, was the speaker, and Ms. Thoidingjam Udayini Khuman, Transplant Coordinator, MOHAN Foundation, accompanied her.
As a continuation of the awareness campaign at Shija Hospitals & Research Institute (SHRI) Pvt. Ltd., the second round of sessions with the MBBS students was conducted with the approval and guidance of Prof. Dr. Maisnam Amuba Singh, Director of the Shija Academy of Health Sciences, Langol, Imphal.
The MOHAN Foundation team was welcomed by the faculties and the students. Ms. Monica began the session by asking participants about their understanding of organ donation and transplantation. She continued the session by introducing the MOHAN Foundation, its objectives, and its visions.
The presentation began with a brief overview of living kidney transplantation happening in the state of Manipur. Ms. Monica cited the real challenges faced by the family members of the patients who do not have a donor but are enrolled in the organ transplant waiting list and hoping for a miracle to happen. Students were explained the scenario of organ donation, the need and availability status, the issues of organ trading in India, and the only way to curb this practise with a robust deceased organ donation programme. She also shared the difference between brain death and natural death, the myths and facts of organ donation, and the importance of family consent in organ donation.
Following that, the participants had a brief interaction in which they shared their perspectives on organ donation. Later, FAQs on organ donation were distributed to the participants for a better understanding of the topic.
Close to 150 participants attended the session.
