Awareness Talk at Poondi Madha Basilica, Thanjavur

  • Rev. Fr. Britto invited MOHAN Foundation, Chennai, to organize an Organ Donation Awareness Program for the youth and rural public. It was held for the church youth group and rural public at Alamelupuram in Thiruvaiyaru taluk of Thanjavur district . It was held at the church conference hall, Poondi Madha Basilica on 23rd March 2013. 

     

    A group of around 100 rural public including church youth group, school students and men and women attended the program. 

     

    Mr. Johnson, Transplant Coordinator, MOHAN Foundation, Chennai addressed the gathering and explained to them various concepts related to deceased organ donation.

     

    The interactive session helped the rural public to clarify their doubts and better understand the concept of deceased organ donation and to develop right knowledge and attitude towards this noble cause.

     

    The main topics discussed during the programme were:

     

    • ·Blood Donation and its benefits.
    • ·Types of Organ Donation - Live and Deceased Donation
    • ·Procedure for eye donation
    • ·Brain Death- how it is different from natural death and coma
    • ·Organs that can be donated after brain death and natural death
    • ·Transplantation of Human Organs Act 1994.
    • ·Statistics of donors in Tamil Nadu.
    • ·Commercial transactions of organ selling is an offense under the THO Act 1994.
    • ·Role of Transplant Coordinators in Hospitals
    • ·Activities of MOHAN Foundation across the country to strengthen the Deceased Organ Donation programme

     

     

    68 people picked up donor cards and pledged their support for the cause.  The discussions were on eye donations, commercial exploitation of living donors and whether suicide, poisoning cases, assault victims can be organ donors.
