On 23rd October, 2013 an awareness session on organ donation and transplantation was organized for the nursing staff from the Department of Cardiology and Casualty, Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) Hospital, Puducherry. The session was conducted by Mr. Ananth. R, Transplant Coordinator, MOHAN Foundation – deputed at Pondicherry Institute of Medical Science (PIMS) Hospital, Puducherry. Dr. Biju Pottakkat, Assistant Professor, Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, JIPMER Hospital and Dr. Santhosh Sathish, Assistant Professor, Department of Cardiology, JIPMER Hospital took the initiative to organize the session.
In his session he covered the following topics: types of donations – live and deceased donation; difference between brain death, cardiac death and coma; organs that can be donated; the number of hours the various organs can be preserved before transplantation; importance of the donor card; the role of staff nurses and transplant coordinators; the legal formalities involved and about the activities of MOHAN Foundation to strengthen the deceased organ donation programme in the country.
There were totally 12 nurses who participated in the session. All of them picked up a donor card.
