Awareness Session on Organ Donation for SICU Staff at Indira Gandhi Govt. Medical College, Nagpur

  • On 9th July 2019, MOHAN Foundation conducted awareness session in association with Transplants – Help The Poor Foundation conducted an awareness talk on organ donation for SICU Staff at Surgical Complex, Indira Gandhi Govt. Medical College, Nagpur. It was held by Dr. Vaishali C Shelgaokar (HOD of Anaesthesia) and Ms. Prarthana Dwivedi (Transplant Coordinator). The participants were Nurses, Paramedic staffs and Resident Doctors and patients’ family of the SICU Department.

    Ms. Prarthana Dwivedi introduced MOHAN Foundation as an NGO working passionately for deceased organ donation past 21 years. She explained the difference between cardiac death & brain death in-depth. Then she elaborated about the organs & tissues that can be donated by both the cases. She also introduced the public about new advances like Hand Donation. She explained about tissue donation (skin, eyes & bones).

    She then discussed about organ donations that can happen in case of brain dead case and number of lives that can be saved by giving the examples of successful transplant stories articles and news about green corridor which was very familiar to the participants.

    Dr. Vaishali C Shelgaonkar discussed about myths around organ donation mostly families of deceased donor have and how to debunk them by explaining relevant facts. She described the importance of discussing about organ donation within the family and to carry donor card always in purse or wallet. About 15 people attended the session. We thank Dr. Vaishali C Shelgaokar (HOD of Anaesthesia) and Dean Dr. Ajay Keoliya for supporting the cause of organ donation.
