On October 3, 2023, the MOHAN Foundation conducted an awareness session on organ donation at the Health and Wellness Centre (HWC), Samushang, Manipur. Ms. Laishram Monica Devi, Programme Officer, and Ms. Thoidingjam Udayini Khuman, Transplant Coordinator of MOHAN Foundation, attended the session as the key speakers.
Ms. Ningoltombi Takhellambam, Community Health Officer, HWC, Samushang, contacted the MOHAN Foundation and coordinated for the same. Staff of the centre, accredited social health activists (ASHA), and citizens of the area attended the session.
Ms. Monica began the session by talking about how important it is to donate organs and how communities should learn more about it. She stressed the importance of caring about this topic by talking about how hard it is for sick people who need organs from people who have passed away and how they manage the list of people waiting for organ transplants. She also explained what organs and tissues can be donated when someone's heart stops or when they have brain damage. She also talked about common misunderstandings about organ donation and why a family's agreement is important when someone donates their organs.
She also narrated the case of the first deceased organ donation that happened in Manipur, which was also the first in the entire north-east of India. Ms. Udayini explained the process of pledging for organ donation on the National Organs and Tissues Transplant Organisation’s (NOTTO) website. Frequently Asked Questions about organ donation were distributed to all the participants for better understanding of the topic.
The people thanked the MOHAN Foundation for getting in touch with them. They felt it was worthwhile to save someone's life by donating organs instead of cremating or burying them.
Close to 17 participants attended the session.
