Awareness Session on Organ Donation Conducted for the Students of Rajkiya Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya, West Vinod Nagar, Delhi

  • On September 18, 2023, MOHAN Foundation conducted an awareness session on organ donation for the students of class XII Rajkiya Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya, West Vinod Nagar, Delhi. Ms. Simran Anand, Programme Office, MF, Delhi NCR, met with Ms. Jyotsana Minz, Principal, Rajkiya Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya, West Vinod Nagar, Delhi, on August 24, 2023, to discuss holding the session for their students. The school's science teacher, Ms. Urmila Singh, coordinated with Ms. Simran to organise the session. Students from four different sections of grade 12 attended the session held in the auditorium of the school.

     

    Rajkiya Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya, West Vinod Nagar, Delhi is a girls school, established in 1990 and it is managed by the Department of Education. It is located in the DOE block of EAST DELHI district of Delhi. The school consists of 1 to 12 Grades.

     

    Ms. Simran was welcomed by Ms Urmila. Ms. Simran began the session by asking participant’s understanding about organ donation. She then explained the basic concepts of organ donation and transplantation with the help of a PowerPoint presentation. The following topics were explained in detail:

     

    • Organ donation and its need in the society

    • When and how does organ donation take place

    • Organs that can be donated during life and after death

    • Transplantation of Human Organs Act, 1994

    • Transplant waiting list in India

    • Brain death

    • Difference between coma and brain death

    • Role of MOHAN Foundation

    • Myths and facts about organ donation

    • Green corridor

    • Eye donation

     

    Participants shared their perspectives on the cause, and many of them discussed the organ donation experiences of their families. A student told her classmates about an article she read in the Times of India about the green corridor and how a zero-traffic corridor was created between Delhi and Pune to transport a heart.

     

    Over all the session was very interactive where participants enthusiastically contributed to the discussion and asked many queries. To name a few:

    • What is the difference between coma and brain death?

    • Can brain also be donated?

    • How the organs are transported from one place to another?

     

    The session came to a close with Ms. Urmila thanking Ms. Simran for conducting the session and expressing interest in hosting the Angels of Change training program for their students after their mid-term examinations.

     

    Close to 150 students participated in the session.
