Updated on Sunday, February 9, 2025
  • An awareness session on organ donation was conducted by Ms. Sakshi on January 24, 2025 at the RTO office in Wadala for individuals coming for the online driving exam. The session aimed to educate the public on who can donate organs, the organs that can be donated after brain death and cardiac death, and the difference between organs and tissues. Ms. Sakshi explained that anyone can donate organs as long as they are healthy, with vital organs like the heart, kidneys, liver, and lungs being eligible for donation in the case of brain death, and kidneys, liver, and corneas being viable for donation after cardiac death. She also clarified that tissues like skin, bones, and heart valves could be donated after cardiac death.

The audience actively participated with questions, including whether a person who has had a heart attack can donate organs and what the time limits for organ transplantation are. Ms. Sakshi explained that while a heart attack might not affect the viability of organs like kidneys and corneas, the heart itself typically wouldn’t be suitable for donation unless brain death was involved. She also highlighted the critical time windows for organ transplantation, such as 4-6 hours for the heart and lungs, up to 24 hours for kidneys, and 12-18 hours for liver and pancreas.

Furthermore, Ms. Sakshi emphasized that during the driving exam, individuals would be asked whether they would like to donate organs. It is important to make an informed decision on whether to donate or not, and participants were encouraged to think carefully about their choice and make a decision that aligns with their values and beliefs.Top of Form
