On December 9, 2024, Lata Mangeshkar Medical College and Hospital partnered with the MOHAN Foundation to set up an information desk on organ donation and transplantation at the Eye OPD. The initiative was led by Mr. Bulu J. Behera, the transplant coordinator at the MOHAN Foundation, and aimed to educate OPD patients and their families about the importance of organ donation. The desk was equipped with informational brochures, registration forms, donor cards, and a standee to effectively engage the public.
The program covered various topics related to organ donation and transplantation, such as its legal and ethical implications, the Organ Transplant Act of 1994, and the types of death relevant to organ donation, including tissue donation in natural death and organ donation in brain death. Other key areas of focus included the age criteria for donation, the time sensitivity of transplanting organs and tissues, and the roles of organizations like NOTTO, ROTTO, SOTTO, and ZTCC. Patients and their relatives actively participated by asking questions about kidney dialysis, transplant life expectancy, and the organ donation process.
The event was attended by approximately 48 patients and relatives, of whom 5 people took pledge for organ donation, while others chose to register online. Several visitors expressed interest in visiting the MOHAN Foundation office for more information on kidney transplantation and available financial assistance through government schemes. Mr. Behera also provided valuable advice on avoiding organ donation scams, further enhancing the program's impact. The initiative was made possible with the support of Dr. Mayank Gadkari, Administrative Officer at Lata Mangeshkar Medical College and Hospital, and succeeded in raising awareness and encouraging community participation in organ donation.
