The Advanced Transplant Coordinators Workshop was held on the 23rd and 24th of March 2018 in Chennai. The theme of the workshop ‘Let us Refocus’ helped the participants of MOHAN Foundation from Delhi, Mumbai, Nagpur, Hyderabad, Madurai, Salem, Coimbatore and Chennai focus on the cause and share their views.
Dr. Darius Mirza, Professor of HPB and Transplant Surgery, University Hospital Birmingham and Birmingham Children’s Hospital was the guest speaker. He explained on the benefits of Donation after Cardiac Death, he also put forth the question to the audience ‘DCD in India – Is India ready?’ Ms. Jayanthi Sampathkumar, IT Manager, Microsoft spoke about her journey as a marathoner, how the idea of running in a saree was birthed and what pushed her to make the cut for the Guinness Book of World Records. She focused on the importance of mental strength in addition to physical fitness. Mr. Gowtham, Founder & Market Strategy Consultant, Brand That Social put forth the various ways how social media works and how far the message of organ donation can be spread. Ms. Thilaka Ravi, Reporter, Writer, Quality Control Overseer – Medindia, Professor – Institute of Distance Education (IDE), University of Madras pointed out common errors one makes when writing an article and Ms. Amala, Medindia illustrated the beauty of infographics and how it attracts an audience.
The SWOT analysis of MOHAN Foundation was done by Mrs. Lalitha Raghuram. Dr. Sumana Navin and Ms. Sujatha Suriyamoorthi shared their experience during their mini fellowship. They spoke about the Organ Procurement Organization activities, Trainings and Family support services provided by the Gift of Life Institute, Philadelphia, USA. Ms. Suganya. R, took the audience through the various organ donor registries for various states. Ms. Ann Alex showed the various features available on the Moodle website for the one year e-learning participants. Mr. Siva Shankar with the help of examples explained the requirements for a good photo and video. Ms. Pallavi Kumar listed out the various ways to write a good press release that would capture the audience. Dr. Sumana Navin spoke about the value of the Indian Transplant Newsletter and encouraged the audience to write about the difficult donations they face, to publish it. Dr. Sunil Shroff enlightened the audience about the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the NHS Blood and Transplant, UK and the various opportunities provided for coordinators. Dr. Satya Vrat Sharma, MBE, Chair, Promoting Organ Donation (POD), UK addressed the gathering via Skype. He mentioned that after signing the MoU, a lot of activities have been carried out. He stressed on working more intensively with the BAME community and sort to MOHAN Foundation for help in getting celebrities like cricketers and actors to support organ donation with the BAME community in the UK. Dr. Hemal Kanvinde gave a brief report on the Helpline and the helpline app, the various languages through which the public gets their queries answered.
Dr. Anirban Bose, Nephrologist, Strong Memorial Hospital, United States via Skype spoke about the roles of MOHAN USA and its accomplishments thus far, he went on to speak about the upcoming fundraiser in Seattle, USA. Participants were made to take part in various activities done by Dr. Sridhar Nagaiyan, Senior ICU Consultant, Kauvery Hospital Dr. Sumana Navin and Dr. Hemal Kanvinde to help them understand about the training programmes, apps & simulation and advocacy programmes & Internship programmes. Under the topic ‘what’s new in each centre’, the Nagpur centre by Dr. Ravi Wankhede, Delhi centre by Ms. Pallavi Kumar, Jaipur centre by Mr. Prajesh Taneja, Chandigarh centre by Mr. Sudhir Dewan (via Skype), Mumbai centre by Mrs. Jaya Jairam, Hyderabad centre by Dr. Bhanuchandra and representing the Tamil Nadu centre, Ms. Sunitha Velankanni, Mr. Periyanayagam, Mr. Ragavan, Mr. Raja and Mr. Santhosh from Chennai, Mr. Venkatesh from Madurai, Ms. Persis from Salem and Mr. Nishanth from Coimbatore spoke about the progress that has happened in each centre, the various donations taken place and its challenges.
Dr. Sunil Shroff spoke on the various resources available on the MOHAN Foundation website. A questionnaire to conduct Multi-city study of counseling in government hospitals was discussed by Dr. Sumana Navin.
There was a display of photographs from different states of the various activities done to spread the message of organ donation.
