  • Mr. Sushant Kaushal   - 20 Years

''Sushant always liked to come first in everything and sure enough, he was the first one to leave the world too.''Âť These are the words of Mr. Santosh Kaushal, father of 20 year old Sushant whose bright life was tragically cut short on November 22, 2012 in a fatal road accident. His hands shake as he says this and the eyes have a faraway look.

A 3rd year Computer engineering student at PDM College in Delhi, 20 year old Sushant Kaushal or Sunny as his loved ones called him had everything going on for him in his life. An inherently jovial person, his life revolved around his college and the usual banter with his friends at old Rajinder Nagar in Central Delhi. He was a fitness enthusiast and loved going to the gym. Although his Family hailed from the town of Mandi in Himachal Pradesh, Sunny was born and brought up in the city where his father has an Ambulance service at Sri Ganga Ram Hospital.

On that fateful day, five of his friends had carpooled on their way to their exam and met with an unfortunate accident that resulted in the death of Sushant and one of his friends. The family shocked and unprepared for such a sudden and untimely death, showed the fortitude and courage to agree to organ donation when the doctors and the counselors at Gangaram Hospital approached them. Since Mr. Kaushal and his own brother worked at the hospital, there was a greater trust and it didn’t take much counseling for the family to agree to donate his organs although it was a decision etched in extreme sadness yet exceptional selflessness.

The family’s large heartedness was reciprocated in equal measure by everyone else. When MOHAN Foundation counselor’s approached the police, it being a Medico Legal Case, the entire Rajender Nagar police station as well as the forensic team from Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) showed sensitivity and gave full cooperation to make the process swift and easy for the family members.

It is sometimes really difficult not to lean towards a life mired with belief in fate; Sushant was born in the same hospital where he passed away. His young body gave life to 7 people, one of them a young engineer like Sushant in a rare intestinal transplant at Medanta. His kidneys, liver, heart, both the corneas and the small intestine were transplanted to save other lives. Heart was shared with a recipient at AIIMS.

In that dim lit room where Sushant’s father talked about him, it was not difficult to see the sorrow that still engulfs him as his hand shake and his voice trembles. Yet when he speaks, there is pride in his voice. “Mera beta ab saat zindigiyon me ji raha hai” (My son is now living in 7 lives)
